Battle of South Mountain Remembered
The Battle of South Mountain was fought on September 14, 1862, as part of the Maryland Campaign. In pursuit of General Lee’s Confederate forces, General McClellan pushed his forces across the three South Mountains passes: Crampton’s, Turner’s, and Fox’s Gaps. During the fighting at Fox’s Gap Major General Jesse L. Reno, commander of the Union’s Ninth Corps was mortally wounded. Jesse Reno was born April 20, 1823 in Wheeling, Virginia. He was in the West Point class of 1846. Near where he was killed the IX Corps veterans dedicated a monument to General Reno in 1889.
