  • Experience the Civil War Years & Celebrate West Virginia's 150th Birthday

The 35-star flag, hand sewn here in Harrison County in 1963 will be on display at the Waldomore, known as the "Sycamore-Dale" or "Rider Flag", along with other artifacts.

Historical Film Festival: Adjacent to the Waldomore, the Clarksburg Harrison Public Library will host a Civil War history festival film, featuring the original film, "The Story of Harrison County: Civil War to Statehood".  This film presents the battles that were fought here, as well as the role of Harrison County as a major supply depot and staging area for the Civil War, due to its location at the crossroads of the major north-south roads and on the train route.  As a result, defense of our County was critical.  By the same videographer, the 9-part film about the major events in WV during the Civil War.  "A State Born from a Nation Torn" will be shown.  This award winning videographer, born in Clarksburg, along with other scholars will be available to discuss this period in Harrison County history.

Historical Tours:  Stories of the movement of troops to Clarksburg as a staging area throughout the War, are the result of its strategic location at the intersection of Route 19, moving troops and supplies north and south and Route 50 going east and west.  This center of commerce brought vast changes to the isolated people of this mountainous region-of immigrants and emigrants, blacks and whites, rich and poor.  Harrison County is uniguely positioned to tell the story of how the Civil War affected people of the mountains particularly in business and industrial growth.  Defense of this area was critical to the soldiers.  Civil War bunkers are just one of many historical features of the County that will be featured on the Civil War history tours guided by noted scholars on our antique trolley.

A free tour on an antique trolley, guided by scholars, will circulate throughout Clarksburg starting from Waldomore.  The tours will explore the sites and enliven the tour with stories of Harrison County people of the period through artifacts, historical facts, and the very sites where they lived.  The major themes include the culture, history, hardship, endurance, and triumph that transforemed American history and American culture.  A free newspaper-size map will feature the sites of historical importance and provide additional tours of other parts of Harrison County for driving and walking.
